Repair or Scrap: Where the Break-Even Sits

Three numbers settle it. Two of them you already have.

THE SHORT ANSWER

When does repairing stop paying?

Repairing stops paying when the quote in front of you costs more than the value it restores. The value it restores is what the car is worth running, minus what it is worth scrapped — because the scrap offer is money you can have today without spending anything. Past that line, you are paying to keep a vehicle that is worth less than the repair.

Repair cost > (value repaired − scrap offer) → scrap it

The scrap offer belongs in the calculation because it is the alternative you give up by repairing. A $2,000 repair on a car worth $2,600 running looks survivable until a $600 scrap offer is set against it, at which point the repair buys exactly nothing.

YOUR NUMBERS

How do I work out my own break-even?

Enter the three figures below and the result updates as you type. Use the repair quote you have been given, a realistic private-sale price for the car once it is fixed, and the scrap offer for it as it stands today. Nothing is sent anywhere.

Enter your three figures and the verdict appears here.

A guide, not an appraisal. The scrap figure is confirmed against the vehicle at pickup, and the repaired value depends on your local market.

WHAT THE MATHS MISSES

What belongs in the calculation beyond the quote?

Twelve months of known costs. Insurance, registration, and the repairs you can already see coming — the tyres at the wear bars, the exhaust that will fail inspection, the battery on its last winter. Add those to the repair quote before you compare, because they arrive whether or not you fix the current fault.

REPAIR OR SCRAP QUESTIONS

What else decides it?

Cash For Cars Incity answers valuation questions by phone on (403) 835-7218. The 6 questions below cover which repairs outrun a car’s value, why past spending is irrelevant, which running costs count, and when safety decides it instead of cost.

Which repairs cost more than the car is worth?

Engine replacement, transmission replacement, and frame or structural rust each outrun an older vehicle’s value on their own. Head gasket work, a full brake and suspension overhaul, and rust repair across sills and floor pans reach the same point when they land together on a car already near the end of its life.

Should the repair I have already paid for change the decision?

No. Money already spent cannot be recovered by spending more, and it tells you nothing about what the next repair returns. Compare the quote in front of you against the value it restores. A car you put a new transmission into last year is worth exactly what it is worth today.

What running costs belong in the maths?

Insurance, registration, and the repairs you already know are coming — the tyres at the wear bars, the exhaust that will fail its next inspection, the battery on its last winter. Add twelve months of those to the repair quote before comparing. A car that needs $900 now and $1,400 across the year is a $2,300 decision.

When is safety the deciding factor rather than cost?

When the fault is in the brakes, the steering, the airbags, the seat belts or the structure. Those are not repairs to defer while the arithmetic is considered, because the failure mode is a collision rather than a breakdown. A vehicle that cannot be made safe within its value is finished regardless of what the numbers say.

Does high mileage on its own mean it is time to scrap?

No. Mileage predicts what is coming rather than deciding anything today. A well-maintained vehicle at 300,000 km with no pending failure keeps earning its place. A neglected one at 150,000 km facing a transmission does not. The pending repair bill decides it, not the odometer.

What if the car still runs but nobody will buy it?

That is the common case, and it is what a scrap offer is for. A running vehicle that is worth less than its next repair still carries a drivetrain that can be tested and resold, which puts it above a seized one. Say it runs when you enquire, because it changes the figure.
