THE FIVE STEPS
How do I scrap a car in Alberta, step by step?
Five steps take the vehicle from your driveway to a licensed recycler. Steps one to three are yours and can be done before you call anyone. Step four takes ten minutes. Step five is the removal itself.
01Confirm you are the registered owner
The registered owner arranges the handover. A registration certificate in your name, or a signed bill of sale showing the vehicle passed to you, is what establishes that. Sort this out before anything is scheduled, because a recycler cannot take a vehicle from someone who cannot show they own it.
02Take the plates off the vehicle
An Alberta licence plate is registered to you, not to the car. It moves to your next vehicle or goes back to a registry agent. Remove it before pickup day, along with the registration certificate from the glovebox.
03Cancel or transfer the registration
A registry agent handles both. Cancelling needs the Licence Plate / Parking Placard Cancellation form, acceptable ID, the plate itself and the agent’s service fee. Alberta deducts a $10 cancellation fee plus GST from any refund, and the refund cheque arrives in about 4 to 6 weeks.
04Clear the vehicle out
Check the glovebox, console, boot, under the seats and the spare wheel well. Take the toll transponder, garage remote and any paperwork with your address on it. Once the vehicle leaves the property it is no longer yours to search.
05Arrange the removal
Give the full street address, the vehicle’s year, make and model, and whether it starts, rolls and steers. Towing is free on junk and scrap vehicles across the Calgary region, so the figure you agree is the figure you are handed.
